Calculation Basis

By tradition, the day of passing is day 1. So the first rite is passing + 6 days, then every 7 days, and the 49th-day rite is passing + 48 days.

Cautions

  • Unlike ordinary anniversary calculations, the day of passing itself must be counted as day 1 for the dates to be correct.

The Buddhist and Confucian 49-day counting includes the day of passing as day 1. So the first rite falls on day 7 (passing + 6 days).

FAQ

Does "jae" mean a memorial service?

It uses the character for "purification" (齋), a rite to cleanse the spirit and wish for rebirth in paradise — not the character for ancestral rites (祭).

Is the day of passing counted as day 1?

Yes. The Korean and Buddhist 49-day calculation counts the day of passing as day 1.
