Resistance to Color Band Calculator

Enter a resistance value to see the matching color band combination.

Category: Life Tools

When to use?

Find the color band pattern for a target resistance before selecting components.

How to use

  • Enter resistance value and unit (Ω, kΩ, MΩ).
  • Select band count (4/5) and tolerance.
  • See the color band combination.

Input Explanation

Enter the target resistance value, unit (Ω/kΩ/MΩ), and the number of bands.

Calculation Basis

Deconstructs the numerical value into significant digits and multiplier power, then maps them to the corresponding standard EIA colors.

Usage Examples

  • Part identification - Know the color pattern to pick the right resistor.
  • Learning - Understand the color code system in reverse.

Examples

  • Input '10 kΩ' with 4-band option to get 'Brown-Black-Orange-Gold' color bands
  • Input '220 Ω' with 5-band option to verify 'Red-Red-Black-Black-Brown' color bands

Cautions

  • If the input resistance does not exist in standard E-series (E24, E96, etc.), the tool will display the color bands for the closest nominal production value.

FAQ

Does any value work?

Only values expressible as 2–3 significant digits × power of 10 can be represented as color bands.

Do 4-band and 5-band give different results?

Yes — 5-band uses 3 significant digits for finer resolution.
