Reverse Percentage Calculator

Work back to the original value from a result and its percentage.

Category: Calculators

When to use?

Use it when you know what percentage a final result is of the whole and need to recover the original baseline. Useful for pre-fee amounts, overall size versus a target, and double-checking discount or ratio calculations.

How to use

  • Enter the result value.
  • Enter what percentage that result represents.
  • The original value and the difference are shown.

Input Explanation

Enter the result value and the percentage (%). It cannot be reversed if the percentage is 0.

Calculation Basis

Original = result ÷ (percent ÷ 100). For example, if 15,000 is 30%, the original is 15,000 ÷ 0.3 = 50,000.

Usage Examples

  • Reverse a percentage result - Find the whole when you know a part amount or score as a percentage.
  • Pre-fee amount - Reverse the original billed amount from the after-fee amount and fee rate.
  • Verify a calculation - Work back to the original value to confirm a percentage result.

Examples

  • 15,000 is 30% of the whole → original 50,000
  • 85 points is 80% → 106.25 as the full score

Cautions

  • Depending on decimal handling, small rounding differences can occur when reversing.
  • When reversing principal and tax rates, truncation of fractional amounts may keep the reversed value from matching the principal exactly.

FAQ

How is this different from the percentage calculator?

The percentage calculator finds a part from the whole; this finds the whole from a part and a percentage.

How do I find the original value?

Divide the result by the percentage as a decimal (÷100). If 25% of something is 5,000, then 5,000 ÷ 0.25 = 20,000.

Does it work if the percentage is 0?

No — you cannot divide by zero, so a percentage of 0 cannot be reversed.

Can I enter a percentage over 100%?

Yes. With a value over 100%, the original comes out smaller than the result.
