Use it when you are born in January–February and are unsure of your zodiac sign, or to check the solar-term-based sign used in Korean fortune-telling (saju).

• Compare it with the "Ipchun basis" (around Feb 4) sign used in saju interpretation.

• Born Feb 10, 1996 → before Lunar New Year (Feb 19) so Pig (lunar basis) / after Ipchun (Feb 4) so Rat (Ipchun basis)
• Born Feb 5, 2024 → lunar Dec 26 so Rabbit (lunar basis) / after Ipchun so Dragon (Ipchun basis)

Cautions

• Everyday use and yearly zodiac fortunes usually go by Lunar New Year (1st of the 1st lunar month), while saju interpretation often uses Ipchun.
• For dates where Ipchun falls ambiguously by the minute, the result can differ by reference point.

Lunar New Year vs. Ipchun

The common zodiac changes on Lunar New Year (1st lunar month), but traditional saju astrology switches the sign and year ganji at Ipchun, the spring solar term (around Feb 4).

Early-year births

Those born in January or early February take the previous year's sign if their birthday is before that year's Lunar New Year or before Ipchun.
