Split the Bill Calculator
Enter a total amount and the number of people to calculate the amount per person.
Category: Calculators
When to use?
Use it after a meal or gathering to quickly split the cost by the number of people. It handles the remainder precisely by having the first person pay slightly more.
How to use
- Enter the total amount.
- Enter the number of people.
- The per-person amount and remainder handling are shown.
Input Explanation
Enter the total amount to split and the number of people to split it among.
Calculation Basis
The total is divided by the number of people for the base per-person amount; any remainder is covered by the first person paying 1 more.
Usage Examples
- Split a food bill - Divide a meal cost by the number of people for each share.
- Set membership dues - Divide gathering expenses by attendees for per-person dues.
- Settle travel costs - Split shared travel costs by the number of people afterward.
Examples
- Total 37,000, 3 people → 12,334 (first person), 12,333 for the rest
- Total 80,000, 4 people → 20,000 each (divides evenly)
Cautions
- Depending on the rounding unit, leftover amounts can make the total and the summed shares differ slightly.
- How you set the rounding for small amounts (under 1 or 10) can cause small differences between the grand total and the sum of transfers.
Guides
How splitting works
Divide the total by the number of people for each share. When a remainder occurs, round the last digit up or have one person pay slightly more.
Check the total input
A total of 0 or negative shows no result, and the count must be an integer of 1 or more. If the amount includes a tip, total it with the tip calculator first.
FAQ
How is the remainder handled?
It rounds up so the first person pays slightly more.
Can it calculate per-item amounts?
It currently supports equal splitting of the total amount.
Do I include myself in the count?
Yes — enter the full number of people sharing the cost, including yourself.
What about decimals in the per-person amount?
Any remainder that does not divide evenly is rounded up onto the first person.
